Sweden - Due to the many (and large) waterways, Stockholm is also known as the "Venice of the North." The city lies on fourteen islands connected by bridges, where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. Gamla Stan ('gamla' means old, 'stan' means town) is the oldest part of Stockholm and is located on the island of Stadsholmen in the city center. Construction began in the 13th century. The district consists of old houses in North German style painted in southern European colors (dark yellow, orange), cobblestone streets, and ancient churches. The Royal Palace is also located in this part of the city. Over time, the name Stadsholmen fell out of use, and the island is now referred to as Gamla Stan. Between Stadsholmen and Riddarholmen runs a major traffic corridor connecting north and south Stockholm by road and rail.
