Netherlands - The Amsterdam canals are iconic for the Dutch capital. In rings around the center, they give the city a fresh, open impression. Amsterdam distinguishes itself from many other European cities with this feature. Originally, the canals date from the Middle Ages. The canal served as the city’s defense. Later, during city expansion, a new canal was dug around the city as a new defense line. As the city grew, multiple rings formed around the center. Besides serving as defense lines, the water was also ideal for transport. Ships could reach into the city center, and many warehouses arose along the canals. Many old warehouses still stand in Amsterdam’s Jordaan district. Many have been modernized and converted into apartments. The best way to see the canals is by boat tour.
