Vatican_City - St. Peter’s Basilica is one of the most impressive and famous basilicas in the world, located in Vatican City. It has a classical Latin cross design with a massive dome towering over the skyline of Rome. The basilica’s dome is a striking feature. Designed by Michelangelo and later completed by Giacomo della Porta, it offers spectacular views over Vatican City and the surrounding city. Visitors can climb the dome for a panoramic view of Rome. In front of the basilica lies the expansive St. Peter’s Square, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The square is framed by an impressive colonnade with double rows of columns that suggest an embrace, symbolically welcoming worshippers. The interior of the basilica is richly decorated with artworks, marble, and gilded details. Famous artists such as Michelangelo, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and Raphael contributed to the stunning decorations. Beneath the dome is the main altar of the basilica, above the tomb of Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles and the first Pope according to Catholic tradition. At the center of the basilica stands the imposing Baldachin, a giant bronze canopy designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It marks the tomb of Saint Peter and is positioned directly beneath the dome. One of the most admired artworks inside the basilica is Michelangelo’s Pietà, depicting the Virgin Mary holding the body of Jesus after the crucifixion.
