England - The Houses of Parliament, also known as the Palace of Westminster, house both the House of Lords (upper house) and the House of Commons (lower house). The most famous part of this grand neo-Gothic building is the clock tower, known as Big Ben. In the mid-11th century, King Edward the Confessor moved his court to the Westminster Palace, centrally located along the River Thames. In 1265, a parliament was created with two chambers: the Lords (upper house) and the Commons (lower house). In 1834, a fire destroyed much of the Palace of Westminster. Only the Jewel Tower, the crypt and cloister of St. Stephen’s, and Westminster Hall survived. The redesign featured a large but balanced neo-Gothic complex that incorporated the remaining structures. The entire complex was completed in 1870, more than 30 years after construction began. It includes the Clock Tower, the Victoria Tower, the House of Commons, the House of Lords, Westminster Hall, and the Lobbies.
