France - Classified as a World Heritage site for 30 years, the Château de Versailles is one of the finest achievements of French art in the seventeenth century. The former hunting lodge of Louis XIII was transformed and expanded by his son Louis XIV in 1682. Until the French Revolution, successive kings succeeded in embellishing the castle. The castle lost its role as the official seat of power in 1789. In the nineteenth century, Versailles gained a new purpose. The Château de Versailles became the Museum of the History of France. This was initiated by Louis-Philippe, who ascended the throne in 1830. In the many beautiful rooms of the castle, the collection of major events from French history was displayed. The Château de Versailles remains open to visitors today.
