France - Mont Saint-Michel is a small, rocky peninsula in France. The island lies about one kilometer off the coast near the town of Avranches in Normandy. It was originally a tidal island: accessible by land at low tide but surrounded by water at high tide. Today, a narrow elevated road connects to the island. The island, with its stepped streets, is only accessible to pedestrians. In 1979, Mont Saint-Michel and the surrounding bay were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Originally, the island was a hill in a forested area close to the coast and not protected by dunes. A tidal wave destroyed the forest and washed part of the soil into the sea. This made the land where the forest had once been just low enough to be flooded by the sea at high tide. The hill became an island where an abbey was built. The abbey on the island was constructed between the 11th and 16th centuries. Since 2001, the brothers and sisters of the Monastic Communities of Jerusalem have maintained the religious presence in the abbey. They hold services in the abbey church in summer and in the crypt "Notre-Dame des Trente Cierges" in winter.
