Germany - In Ottobeuren stands the Benedictine monastery and cathedral of Ottobeuren. From a distance, we already see the enormous cathedral. Upon entering the church, we are overwhelmed by the beautiful interior. The Baroque church is lavishly decorated with paintings, sculptures, and woodcarvings. How beautiful this is. We sit down for a moment to take in all the splendor. Everywhere you look, it is stunning beyond words. Behind the church lies the abbey monastery. Until World War II, this was an active monastery. During the war, monastic activities were prohibited. After the war, the monastery was partially reopened. In the vast complex, a youth boarding school was established. We enter the building. To our surprise, we just walk in. We had expected a ticket office. In the cloister corridor there is a café, and we can use the toilets. On the other side of the cloister corridor are signs pointing to the museum. We follow the signs to the second floor. We have no idea what the museum’s collection consists of. We’ll see. The staircase alone is worth the visit. On the second floor is the museum. The museum displays, besides paintings and woodcarvings, the old monastery library and the very special Kaisersaal, the lady at the entrance explains. We are sufficiently convinced and enter the museum. The rooms display objects from the 14th to the 18th century. Statues, paintings, and beautiful woodcarvings from the life of Jesus. The old Baroque monastery library is the highlight. More than 15,000 printed books from the 16th to 18th centuries are housed here in a remarkably bright room. The gallery is supported by 44 columns. The beautiful ceiling painting perfectly matches the style of the hall. The museum route ends in the Kaisersaal. This is the largest hall in the monastery complex. The ceiling painting in this Baroque-style decorated hall depicts the coronation of Charlemagne.
