Monaco - The Principality of Monaco is located on the southern Mediterranean coast of France, near the Italian border, in Southern Europe. It is the smallest independent state in the world after Vatican City and is almost entirely urbanized. Monaco thrives on its tax laws, location, climate, and entertainment industry. A large portion of the state’s revenue comes from the casino. Monaco also hosts a television festival and the international fireworks competition. Monaco and the Grimaldi family go hand in hand. The current prince of Monaco is Albert II, who succeeded his father, Prince Rainier. Economic development took off in the late 19th century after the construction of the railway from France and the opening of the casino. The Monte Carlo Casino is world-renowned and was the first of its kind in Europe, as such "temples of vice" were banned in other countries. Since then, the principality has become a world-famous center for leisure and tourism. When casinos were later legalized in neighboring countries, revenue from the Monte Carlo Casino declined significantly, but Monaco managed to stay afloat thanks to other income sources. Monte Carlo remains the casino of choice for the world’s richest elite.
