Monaco - The area around the Prince’s Palace in Monaco, also known as Monaco-Ville, forms the historic and symbolic heart of the principality. This old town sits on the Rocher de Monaco, a steep rock that rises high above the Mediterranean Sea and the harbor. Unlike the modern and glamorous image many have of Monaco, this district exudes calm, history, and tradition. The Prince’s Palace itself dominates the area. It has been the residence of the Grimaldi family since the thirteenth century and combines fortress-like elements with elegant palace halls. In front of the palace stretches a large square, where the daily changing of the guard takes place. From here, there is an impressive view over Port Hercule and the surrounding neighborhoods. Around the palace lie narrow streets with low, pastel-colored houses, small squares, and shaded passageways. These car-free streets give Monaco-Ville an almost village-like character. In the streets, there are souvenir shops, cafés, and small restaurants, often with terraces overlooking the sea or harbor. Despite the presence of tourists, Monegasques still live here, contributing to the authentic atmosphere. A short distance from the palace lies the Monaco Cathedral, built of white limestone. Here are the graves of several princes, including Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace. The Oceanographic Museum, spectacularly located on the edge of the rock, is another important cultural highlight. The area around the Prince’s Palace provides a calm contrast to cosmopolitan Monaco. Here, history, tradition, and breathtaking views come together, making Monaco-Ville a special and unforgettable part of the principality.
