Slovenia - Although Ljubljana is one of the youngest capitals in the European Union, it boasts a long history and a wealth of cultural and artistic monuments. It is a city with a medieval heart, baroque and art nouveau architecture, and a beautiful old castle. The central point of interest in Ljubljana is Castle Hill. The origins of the medieval castle date back to the 9th century, although it was first mentioned in 1144. The castle received its current form after the 1511 earthquake. Further renovations followed at the beginning of the 17th century. The provincial rulers lived in the castle until the early decades of the 17th century. Later, the castle became a garrison and served as a provincial prison. The current renovation, started in 1980, is nearing completion. The castle is easily accessible by the tourist train, and recently a cable car has been installed, connecting the old town of Ljubljana to the castle hill.
