Denmark - Egeskov Castle is located in the south of the island of Funen. The castle is Europe’s best-preserved Renaissance water castle. The history of Egeskov dates back to the 14th century. Due to problems caused by civil war, most Danish nobles built their homes with fortifications. The castle is built on oak piles and situated in a small lake with a maximum depth of 5 meters. It owes its name to this — Egeskov means "oak forest." Originally, the only access was via a drawbridge. The castle consists of two long buildings connected by a thick double wall. The double wall is more than one meter thick and contains secret staircases and water reservoirs. This allowed defenders to attack enemies on the flanks from the two round corner towers. Inside the castle is a huge iron chest from the 16th century, from Hvedholm Castle, ten kilometers away. There are also various oil paintings in the castle, including a large painting in the great hall on the first floor of Niels Juel, depicting the defeated Swedish forces in the Battle of Køge Bay in 1677.
