Denmark - Free Town Christiania was founded in 1970 when a group of hippies squatted an area with abandoned military barracks in the Copenhagen district of Christianshavn. Since then, the neighborhood has had a form of self-governance. About 1,000 people live permanently in the settlement. The inhabitants make all kinds of products, such as bicycles and small furniture. The population lives in houses designed according to their own taste and lives in one of the most beautiful areas of Copenhagen. About 500,000 people visit Christiania annually. This is well catered for, with many restaurants and cafés. There is much criticism of the luxury of the residents. For example, they do not pay rent and do not pay taxes either. Well, who wouldn’t want to live like that? Christiania has also gained a bad reputation due to the widespread drug use. Furthermore, many motorcyclists with a criminal past came, and drugs were cultivated. For some people, it is also shocking to see how people live here. Most residents have no manners and do exactly what they feel like. A visit is therefore never the same and is always a surprise.
