North_Macedonia - Heraclea Lyncestis was an ancient Greek city in Macedon, later ruled by the Romans. The ruins lie two kilometers south of the town of Bitola in Macedonia. It was founded by Philip II of Macedon in the mid-4th century BC. The city was named after the mythological Greek hero Heracles. The name Lyncestis comes from the ancient kingdom conquered by Philip, on whose territory the city was built. Heraclea was strategically important during the Hellenistic period. It was well situated on the border of Macedon with Epirus to the west and Paeonia to the north, until the mid-2nd century BC when the Romans conquered Macedon and destroyed its political power. The Romans divided Macedon into four regions, and Heraclea belonged to the fourth. The most important Roman road in the area, the Via Egnatia, passed through Heraclea. The city thrived largely due to this road. Roman-era objects discovered in Heraclea include votive monuments, a portico, thermal baths, a theater, and city walls. During the early Christian period, Heraclea became an important episcopal seat. Some of its bishops are recorded in synods in Serdica and other nearby cities. The city was gradually abandoned in the 6th century AD after an earthquake and Slavic invasions. There is a small museum on-site with a beautiful scale model of how the city must have looked at its peak.
