Spain - The historic cities Úbeda and Baeza are among the finest Renaissance towns in Spain and are jointly listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both cities are located in the province of Jaén, surrounded by vast olive groves, and form a remarkable example of the cultural flourishing of Andalusia during the 16th century. Úbeda is known for its elegant palaces, churches, and squares built in Renaissance style. The city developed thanks to the influential statesman Francisco de los Cobos, advisor to Emperor Charles V, who brought renowned architects to the city. The Plaza Vázquez de Molina is particularly impressive, with monumental stone buildings that reflect the wealth of that era. The narrow streets and quiet courtyards give Úbeda a timeless and atmospheric character. Not far away lies Baeza, a smaller but equally beautiful city. It has a calm and authentic atmosphere, with old university buildings, cathedrals, and stately mansions. Its sandstone façades glow beautifully in the Andalusian sunlight. Baeza played an important role for centuries as a religious and intellectual centre and has preserved its historic character exceptionally well. One of the most remarkable places in Úbeda is the Sinagoga del Agua, also known as the Water Synagogue. This hidden synagogue was only discovered in 2007 during restoration work on an old house. The building likely dates back to the medieval period and contains a ritual bath, a mikveh, fed by natural spring water. Its simple stone rooms, water basins, and Hebrew inscriptions provide a striking insight into former Jewish life in Andalusia before the expulsion of the Jews in 1492. Together, Úbeda and Baeza form a unique historic landscape where Christian, Islamic, and Jewish influences remain visible in the architecture and culture of these remarkable Andalusian cities.
